Near Heidelberg, Around the winding river
From my home studio in the converted garage, I cross the road and am immediately in the Warringal parklands, surrounded by trees and pathways along the Yarra River. My daily walks along the Banyule Flats provides a wealth of inspirations and connectedness that transform me from a worrying, stressed out ego mind, to the calm and curious, aware of my fellow living creatures, trees, birds, and insects filling the world around me.
These works on paper are from my immediate recollections and sensations post walking the windy path. They are gestures and marks delving beyond the literal into the pre-intellectual responses that are guided by the hand and brush.
‘Gum as a model whilst shedding’
‘Gum as a model whilst shedding’, is a works on paper created immediately after a morning walk around the river. The bark from the gums were glistening in the morning sun after the morning condensation. I always find the gums are beautiful dancing models ready for drawing with their white ghost limbs moving and dancing through space and time. You will find remnants of the walk in the rice paper sketches collaged into the work.
This work is mounted on panel using a Japanese archival mounting technique, and varnished,
70cm x 50cm x 4cm.
‘Feeling the energy lines’
‘Feeling the energy lines’, is a works on paper made directly after a walk where I felt extremely connected to the energy of the trees and the path beside the river. The work is made with ink and watercolour and ink pen. I only use chinese brushes, giving so much diversity of mark and flow, to quickly translate the feelings of the walk.
